Do we give soil the attention it deserves?
Humans and other species need this resource to exist. For example, it provides 95% of the food that we eat.
However, it was largely overlooked in environmental protection until a few years ago.
And its degradation
In the EU, it has led to the loss of ecosystem services estimated to be around €38,000 million a year
Ensuring the soil has special protection is essential.
And the tables are already turning.
SOILUZIOAK 2023 is the soil protection event of the year. The aim is to gather together 250 experts in the field to reflect on the need to manage soil from different perspectives including human health, biodiversity, climate change, food security & safety, and water quality.
Soil protection is gaining momentum and acquiring a holistic approach in the pressing need to safeguard our planet’s economic, social and environmental values. The emphasis had been nearly exclusively on managing soil, even in the most industrialised countries, where contaminated soil is a problem.
The Basque Country is a benchmark in contaminated soils, but it is also aware that contamination is not the only threat: erosion, soil sealing, salinization, compacting, loss of organic matter and biodiversity, or landslides should not be overlooked.
SOILUZIOAK 2023 has one sole objective: for soil to be fully protected.
By reflecting on the current challenges, contributing new criteria, showcasing good practices and raising awareness among stakeholders. The event is thus aimed at public administrations and entities, professionals and agents of knowledge & innovation; but is also for the general public.
