Carlos Garbisu

Carlos Garbisu is the Scientific Director at NEIKER, the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development. He graduated with a Degree in Biology from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and has a Master of Science from Imperial College of Science and Technology (London). He obtained his PhD from King’s College London. He subsequently completed post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2018, Carlos was recognised by the Basque Government for his research work and his scientific and technological merit throughout his career. In 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, he was included in the “World’s Most Influential Scientists (Top 2%)”, a ranking produced by researchers at Standford University. In 2021, Carlos was also included in the Top 1% of soil researchers 2011-2021, based on the data taken from the PubMed database. He lectures on 5 university master’s degree, where his teaching is focused on soil microbiology. His main line of research focuses on the use of microbial ecology tools to assess the impact of shocks to functional sustainability of the soil ecosystem, along with monitoring the effectiveness of biological remediation processes for contaminated soils. Carlos has published > 175 indexed articles in the Scopus database, with an h index > 50, and a total number of citations > 8400.
