Dr. Ricardo Ruiz-Peinado is a Senior Scientist at the Forestry Science Institute (ICIFOR) of the Spanish National Institute of Food and Agricultural Research and Technology (INIA, Spanish Agricultural Research Council).

He has a PhD from Valladolid University (2013), Degree in Environmental Sciences and Forestry Technical Engineer (Polytechnic University of Madrid) He completed his training with short research stays at different research centres of companies (Helsinki University (Finland), Munich University (Germany) and Forest Enterprise Traunstein (Germany)).

His research work focuses on estimating carbon in the different compartments of the forest ecosystems; and on establishing the effect of forestry management on the carbon reserves that allow the most appropriate system to maximise carbon sequestration to be clearly identified. Studying productivity, relationships and the partition of biomass in forests are also among his current research areas

Ricardo has 56 articles published in high impact journals, along with 24 books or book chapters, and has given 95 papers to international and national conferences.

His lines of research have mainly concentrated on developing models to estimate the biomass in forest cover and quantify the effect of forest management on the different carbon reservoirs to establish the influence of forestry management activities.

His research has resulted in carbon estimation tools being developed for different forest tree species. Specifically, biomass estimation models have also been adjusted for young reforested areas, along with biomass models for shrub or thicket species, both for mono-specific cover or in communities. Furthermore, the effect of making clearings in pine groves on the carbon of the different forest compartments is also known. Focusing on quantifying the carbon stocks in the forest, he has estimated the carbon stock in the litterfall layer in Spain. Thanks to these tools and existing knowledge, the forest carbon stock in Spain can be precisely quantified in order to be able to report to international committees and agreements.

Ricardo is also committed to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and results obtained throughout his scientific research career. He has thus taken part in different conferences, workshops and lectures to disseminate the results to forestry managers, students or the public. His teaching activity includes lecturing on the DATAFOREST and MedFOR Master’s Degree at Valladolid University for the last 9 years He has supervised degree and master’s theses and also works with students in their last year. He is currently the PhD dissertation director at Valladolid University for the “Estimating and distribution of biomass in mixed woods” area.
